Are you a box-checker like me? Sometimes I read my Bible chapter for the day, check it off my list, and move on to the next thing. The purpose of doing something like journaling is to go beyond rushed box-checking, slowing down long enough for God to speak to us so we experience life-transformation.
HEAR stands for Highlight, Explain, Apply, Respond – the journaling method we will be using as we work our way through the Foundations New Testament reading plan in 2025. It goes like this:
1. Pick your time of day and location for your meeting with God. Consistency is key.
2. Pray. Ask God to open your eyes, to help you understand what you’re reading, and to speak to you.
3. Read the chapter of the day.
4. Highlight (H) key verses that stand out to you. Usually something will catch your eye, and this may be different for everyone! Note what your highlighted verse(s) in your journal.
5. Explain (E) what your highlighted verses mean. Why was it written? To whom? How does it fit within the context of the chapter? Why do you think this might be important enough to be included?
6. Apply (A) by reflecting more personally on these verses. Ask yourself questions like: What does this text teach us about God? Is there an action or attitude to avoid or embrace? What would applying this text look like in my life? What is God saying to me? Make notes in your journal. (This is the heart of the reflection exercise!)
7. Respond (R) to what God is revealing to you. This could be with a prayer, a commitment to action, or something else.
Even though I made you a nice checklist, do not forget that the main point is to take time to reflect on and personalize what you are reading. We are not reading the text just to get smarter; we are reading to allow God to speak to us and transform our character and way of life!
